Sarah and Luke were married at The Filter Building which sits right next to the White Rock Lake in Dallas, Texas. Sarah and Luke are family, and I couldn't have been more happy by both shooting and being a part of their wedding. Really, it was a three day event covering both Sarah and Luke graduating from TCU, Luke being commissioned into the Army as an officer, and ending with the two of them being joined in marriage.

I actually took a huge risk editing this way before showing any proof of concept to them; for if they didn't like it, then I would have wasted my time. To state upfront, Paris and Hani held God in their relationship and you can clearly see that they have a bond between them that differs from most. Working with couples that have a deeper sense of love for each other always inspires me to be a better husband and father to my children. Not to stray to far from the blog at hand, but part of why I enjoy so much working in the wedding industry is that it is a constant reminder of that sense of intimate connection and pure joy that couples have when first married. Mikele and Michael Wedding at the Ritz Carlton

Mikele and Michael were married at the Ritz Carlton in Dana Point, California.

These two are the couple that most aspire to be. Both were wholly and devoted to each other, put each other before themselves, and had a love that will last through the trials that marriage often brings.

The day could not have been more beautiful. Nestled atop a cliff overlooking the ocean, the ceremony was simply breathtaking.

The main photoshoot took place just down the cliff on the beach. I remember as we were going down there, how incredibly the sunset and weather happened to be.

Part of the ceremony that didn't make it into this edit was a group of people from Mikele's church came up and sang a song a cappella. I wanted to show part of it here in still form. Read more...

In the heart of San Diego, Kathryn and Brandon were married at the breathtakingly historic U.S. Grant Hotel.

The day was perfect for a wedding, the weather was amazing and the location was beautiful. Both Kathryn and Brandon were a joy to work with and a pleasure to be around. Their family and friends joined them in a outright celebration of their marriage and it was apparent that everyone there was having the time of their lives. From the amazing live band to the gorgeous wedding cake the reception was non-stop from the time it started. We hope you enjoy watching this as much as we enjoyed filming and editing it together.

A Vintage Wedding Vignette Inspired by Water for Elephants

"This mock wedding is inspired by the book and movie Water for Elephants."

A few weeks ago Marilyn (who we first met when we shot her wedding) contacted us and wanted to know if we wanted to do a mock vintage wedding shoot. Of course we said "heck yeah!" We didn't know much more than that until the day before the shoot. She emailed us the location which happened to be not to far from us, Orange Empire Railway Museum. When we first got to the train station, it was like finding a hidden treasure, we were all looking around in disbelief. We had no idea something so amazing was located so close to where we live. Once we found Marilyn she walked us around and told us that the movie "Water for Elephants" actually did filming there not too long ago for part of the movie, which is where the inspiration for this whole shoot came from. What was most amazing to me out of the whole day was how excited all the vendors were to get together out of their own free time and make something amazing. It was a pleasure to work with all the amazing talent that went into the making of this extra ordinary day. Read more...

Teaser Reel for Rustic Red Studio

This edit is for a wedding show we are attending tomorrow Sunday the 17th of April. weddingwiseshow.com

It has various weddings we've shot this past year and some from weddings we haven't put up yet.

Additionally there is some footage in there from a shoot we did with the Magic Lantern T2i Hack. After shooting a full day with the firmware hack applied, we will definitely be using it full time on all our shoots. More on that later...

Oh also I hope you enjoy the end title sequence, that was a first for me and I think it turned out better than I was expecting.

P.P.S. I touched up the animated logo at the front, added anamorphic flare, changed the lighting, did a slow camera push and adjusted the dust. When I get more time, I'll hopefully finish my vision for it.

Let me know what you think, its a bit edgy for a wedding teaser.

Ardina and Chris Highlight

Ardina and Chris were a pleasure to work with and I'm so glad that we had the opportunity to capture their day for them.

Where do I even begin with this one? This edit was one of the most fun liberating edits I've done in a long time. Not to say that I don't enjoy the other edits that I've done in the past. They are all unique and I pour the same amount of effort into each and every one. However, this edit took a different spin.

Two things happened technically to make this edit come out the way it did. First, I started experimenting with true slow-motion. And by "true" I mean I had to decided while I was shooting, to change settings in the camera. So with some sick looking slow-motion, I couldn't have your typical wedding song which leads me to the second thing that happened. When Ardina and Chris sent over some song choices, one stood out amongst the rest. Needless to say, I had to do something a little different. Read more...

Jessica and Shyd Wedding Highlights

Jessica and Shyd were married at The Immaculata in San Diego, California. This was by far the most theatrical wedding we have done so far. The entire wedding part was a tightly nit group of friends that made the day memorable as well as fun.

Jessica and Shyd were both in dance together in college, which is where they actually met. Needless to say they had their first dance figured out! The reception introduced two cultural dances that the entire wedding party took part in. Several times during the reception, literally everybody was out of their seats either dancing around their tables or out on the dance floor. Jessica and Shyd have people surrounding them that enjoyed celebrating their marriage in a visually astounding way.

We wish the the best and we hope you can enjoy this glimpse into the day that Jessica and Shyd became one.

Ami and Todd Wedding at St. Regis Hotel

Ami and Todd had their wedding at the extravagantly beautiful St. Regis Hotel in Dana Point, California.

This was our first Indian wedding to shoot and it was jam packed with fun and festivities. I guess normal Indian weddings span over several days. This one was all done in single day. Needless to say there was more than enough amazing events to capture.

Todd was taller than average and Ami was delicately small. While this made for an extremely cute couple, it provided a small challenge that we hadn't run into before, getting them in the same frame. There were several shots that were unusable because his or her head were cut off. We had to either quickly step back, or if there wasn't enough room we had to switch lenses. Read more...

Whew, this was a long time coming! I've been patiently waiting for this site to be up and running. This is merely a formal introduction to our new site design.

Before I tell you about the new site, it would be daft of me to to not explain the old one and how we arrived at today.

When we first started this site we didn't have any content to really make the site robust. So I designed it with future content in mind, but I did what everybody else does as far as presentation. This time around I had plenty of content to work with, to really utilize. I wanted to do something different. I wanted to make it much easier to find what you were looking for and quick.

Katy and Jonny Wedding Short Film

Katy and Jonny were married at the Casa Romantica in San Clemente, CA. The entire location was a historical house built in 1927 with an amazing view. When I walked into the house I was overwhelmed with the urge to shoot literally everything.

Katy is very detail oriented and had the day planned out in every way imaginable. She was very hands on with all the setting up and it really paid off, the place looked incredible. Jonny's brother was a sea Captain and thusly was able to officiate over his little brothers wedding. The day was truly amazing from start to finish.

If you haven't noticed, this is one of several short films that we've been putting up on the site recently. They are around twice as long as the highlight films and cover the entire day. I really enjoy editing this and showing the incredible emotion that goes on during a wedding day. I hope you guys enjoy them and be on the look out for many more soon!

An Addition To The Team

For those of you that have gotten married in the last several months, you might have noticed that my wife no longer shoots weddings with me, and that I now have a second camera person to fill her spot.
We have been busy beyond belief here at Rustic Red and I have had to put a bunch of blogs and projects on the back burner for a while. But as things have been calming down I'll be catching up on a handful of things, this being one of them.

My wife and I had our second child not to long ago, little Henry Palan II was born on July 23rd, 2010.
With the looming date of his birth we decided that Breezy would step down from shooting the weddings and would remain on the customer service side of things. Read more...

New Commenting System

I recently installed a new comment system to make it easier for you to leave comments. Part of the move was because as it turns out spammers love spamming comments of blogs. We were getting hundreds if not thousands of spam comments every day. Sure I had spam prevention, but it was never perfect and I always worried it would label some of my readers and viewers as spammers and I didn't want to risk it. So I switched.

You can also now leave a comment as a guest, Disqus, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, and OpenID giving you plenty of easy, no hassle options in leaving a comment.

In the past I've also not really given you a real reason to leave comments, the posts have been kind of one sided. Sure I appreciate the occasional "good job", but that's not why I post or share the videos. Read more...

Liz and Al Wedding: Bagpipes + Double Decker Bus

Liz and Al were married in the beautiful hills of Rancho Sante Fe. The estate was immaculately groomed to perfection for the event.

We received a call from our favorite coordinator Mary Noble of Mary Noble's Classic Weddings saying she had a wedding that needed a videographer so she called us. My wife and I drove down to Rancho Sante Fe to meet with the couple in her parents home. As we were getting closer to the house, the area started to look real familar. Monica and Sean were married in Rancho Santa Fe at her father's beautiful estate. Even though the entire day was well planned and detail oriented, it had an air of simplicity and innocence.

Both Monica and Sean were easy to work with and it made the day go smoothly. To top off the day, there was a live band, mind blowing food, and amazing pool float decorations. I really enjoyed filming the day and editing this short film. Enjoy!

Kim and Kevin Wedding at Green River Golf Club in Corona, CA.

Kim and Kevin were a delight to work with. Their calm and collected personalities made every moment natural. The sunset melted in with the green back drop of the golf course, making the day especially beautiful. The two reminded us of what a wedding day means.

Interestingly enough, we saw Kim and Kevin at a recent wedding we shot where Kim was a bridesmaid. When we first ran into them that day, they both asked how my son was doing, as he was born one week after their wedding. Then later that night they both seemed ecstatic when they informed us of their expected child, which explained the glow we saw around Kim the entire day. We wish them both the best.

They were both amazing to work with and a joy to be around. The entire day was relaxed and had a calm atmosphere.

The highlight of the photoshoot was getting to use a local family's volleyball net to take some sweet pictures of the wedding party.

During the reception we slipped out and went down to the beach during sunset for some last minute shots.

Erica and Michael's Wedding at The Dana on Mission Bay was a day to remember.

From the decor to the location, Erica and Michael had a wedding that spoke volumes of who they are. The wedding had a very intimate feel to it. With this particular edit, I slowed it down and focused on the interaction and intimacy that Erica and Michael seemed to naturally share.

Dawn Mitschele, a friend of the couple, not only provided the music for the ceremony, but also had live music during the reception, and even wrote a song for them. These "love birds" even had a cake to match. We were truely honored to be apart of this memorable celebration.

Sunny and Nik Wedding at Andaz Hotel in San Diego

Sunny and Nik were married at the amazing Andaz Hotel in San Diego California. The day was simply beautiful from start to finish, a relaxing, low-stress wedding. Sunny and Nik were a fun couple and pleasure to work with. I'm glad that we had the opportunity record their wedding day.

The bridal party got ready in a spectacular suite that was adorned with decor that just added to the picturesque day. From the awe-inspiring lobby to the unfinished brick walls that screamed modern urban design, they picked the perfect location to get married. The ceremony itself was placed on top of the hotel looking out to the city beneath it.

At the end of the day, after all that took place, what really mattered was that Sunny and Nik were now married!

Lara and Taylor Wedding at Temecula Creek Inn

Lara and Talyor were married at the Temecula Creek Inn, in Temecula, California. The ceremony was set in a cozy little nook right next to an old creek followed by the reception on the lawn of an amazing old stone house.

This might be my favorite wedding to date because of how intimate and personal the wedding felt to even me, who before this day, didn't even know the couple. Lara had made sure all the details of the wedding were thoughtfully carried out and it all seemed perfectly at home with the location. There was even a two man band that played live cover music and even some original pieces. They were the best wedding band that I've ever heard and their style went hand in hand with the rest of the day. I'm so glad that I get to be a part of weddings like this, they always put a smile on my face.

Kim and Mark Wedding at Sherwood Country Club

Kim and Mark were married at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California. The day was gorgeously beautiful, plenty of sun, and perfect weather.

Kim started getting ready in a huge suite at the Westlake Village Inn. It was two stories with a spiraling staircase and a baby grand piano in the foyer! Goli and Pejman Wedding at the Nixon Library

Goli and Pejman were married at the beautiful Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, California. Goli and Pejman were one of the nicest couples that I've ever met. They were so friendly that by the end of the day it felt like I had know them for a long time. The ceremony was a traditional Persian wedding that was beautifully carried out. Both Goli and Pejman started the ceremony by dancing their way in. The dancing continued non-stop with all the guests from the grand entrance to the last dance. These people know how to celebrate a wedding.

This was the first wedding in which I shot with the Canon Rebel T2i. In fact the only lenses I had for it was the stock lens that came with it, 17-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and a 28mm f1.8 It was only used about half and half with my other Panasonic cameras.

What happens when a wedding gets treated like a movie? That's what I set out to find. Everyday the tools used to capture a live event are becoming better and better. I want to always push the envelope to what the wedding industry is doing for couples getting married.

I was testing some color grading for this wedding, when I toyed with the idea of cutting a movie trailer style teaser showcasing the capabilities of the T2i. This is what I came up with. I hope you guys like it.

The camera that is used is a still camera that does full HD video. What this allows me to do is get the "look" of movies with a small compact camera. If you notice some of the shots the subject is in focus while the background is out of focus.

Traditionally to get that look on a video camera you need an adapter and extra lenses which makes it huge and cumbersome. With the new camera I can freely capture weddings with better control and much better quality than before. Read more...

Family Trip to Disneyland with a Canon Rebel T2i

This is just a quick stitched together piece of my family and I at Disneyland.

Now normally I would tend to stray away from putting up too much personal stuff on my company blog, but I think this might be an exception. For one I'm testing out a new video system that will achieve a much better look and feel that our future clients will appreciate. Secondly, its good to put a face behind a company every once in a while. Unfortunately, I'm not actually in any of the footage, so you will just see my lovely wife and adorable daughter.

Wendy and Van Wedding in Malibu, CA

Wendy and Van were married on the Point Dume beach in Malibu, California. This day was a very fun event for us. Wendy and Van were both very pleasant and fun to be around.

When we met Wendy and Van for the first time, the really liked the older jazz feeling for their wedding. You can really see the old feel in all of Wendy's dresses.

The major challenge for this wedding was the actual ceremony. We were literally right on the water's edge. Just 20' past the wedding party were waves that were coming in. In addition to being right on the edge of the water, it was amazingly windy and cold. Sand and sea water were spraying everywhere, but the ceremony went smoothly and it turned out to be a beautiful wedding.

In the end I really like this piece and I think it fits the couple perfectly.

Marilyn and Moony's Wedding at Strawberry Farms

Marilyn and Moony's wedding at Strawberry Farms Golf Course in Irvine, California was by far the most unique and emotional wedding of which I've ever been to.

Unlike many of our weddings, this was small, intimate, and simple, but with an emotional twist.

Marilyn and Moony were scheduled to be married in Las Vegas, but Marilyn's father, Patrick, had cancer and the condition was getting worse and he had to be flown to Hong Kong to get proper treatment. Because he was going to be in Hong Kong, he was going to miss his daughter's wedding. Marilyn and Moony moved the wedding date to the 2nd of October and changed to Strawberry Farms Golf Club. A few weeks before the wedding, Patrick's conditioned worsened. They decided to get married even sooner with only a few friends and family members present. Andrea and Scott's Wedding at The Lodge

Andrea and Scott's wedding was at The Lodge, a beautiful resort set on a golf course. From sunshine, to fog, back to sun, then back to fog, this day was unpredictably amazing. We had a great time at this wedding. Andrea and Scott were such a pleasure to work with and for. They are both beautiful people and they're happiness is contagious. Andrea was such a riot that I found myself laughing almost constantly. She was so sweet and was even concerned for ME the day of her own wedding!
The Lodge is such a gorgeous location and it fit the couple perfectly. When the fog rolled in you could smell the ocean. The event was photographed by the Bauman Photography Crew. The whole day was like a party, from beginning to end. We even found ourselves dancing as we left!
Like I said, we had such an amazing time at this wedding. It's definitely one that we won't soon forget!
